Probably the biggest single expense in the plant maintenance organization is the manipulation of data. Weekly production of PM schedules, opening and closing of work orders, time collection, measurements of compliance and PM effectiveness, are the issues at hand. We demand more and more information, and this places a huge demand on the maintenance department.

Since the inception of the modern CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management System) companies have developed “planning” groups within there maintenance departments. This has produced inefficiencies within the maintenance department, instead of these people doing maintenance they are now doing “data entry”

A typical manufacturing environment with a maintenance crew of 16 people spread across 4 shifts for continuous coverage, would have a “planning” group of 4 people to maintain the CMMS. 20% of the maintenance department is now doing data entry and not maintenance!
